Global barley pricing

Global Barley Pricing
Barley has been interesting, to say the least, during the past decade. In this analysis, part of our global comparisons special, we will look at feed barley pricing in Australia, France, and Ukraine.
From 2017 to 2020, Australia typically traded at a premium to Ukraine and French values, with as much as an A$100 premium during the middle of 2019.
The fateful tariffs by China came along in 2020, which meant that the lack of access to China and high production locally caused our pricing to fall to a significant discount. France was one of the winners of the tariff on Australian barley. During that tariff period, French feed barley hit a peak of A$602, but in the same month, our barley was priced at A$428.
As soon as China opened to us in August 2023, Australian barley returned to a premium. A sign of our quality and geographical advantage.
Since the tariff was lifted, we have maintained a premium position for barley against the Black Sea and France. However, in recent times, the premium has been relatively narrow.
I’d say we are winning on Barley at the moment, after that short period of losing.
