August 2025 - Beef export update

After a record breaking month of Aussie beef exports in July the trade volumes eased by 10% during August. Despite the decline in total beef export volumes the 135,570 tonnes reported was still the second highest month for the beef export trade on record. Trade flows currently sit 44% above the five-year average pattern for this time in the year.

USA continues to dominate the trade at 29% of the share of exports. Meanwhile China and Japan sit in second and third place at 18.5% and 16.2%, respectively. South Korea follows with nearly 15% of the total export trade in Aussie beef.

A summary of the top trade locations, in order of top market share for 2025, is as follows:

USA – The beef export volumes to the USA dipped by just 5% during August to see 40,743 tonnes shipped. Despite the marginal easing in the trade this still represents levels that are nearly 80% above the August average volumes, based upon the last five years of the trade.

China – There was 22,323 tonnes of Aussie beef reported shipped to China in August, a 28% drop in the volumes seen exported in July. Beef exports to China remain solid though with current volumes running 54% higher than the five-year average pattern for August.

Japan – This was the only top four trade destination to see volumes dip below the average trend with 19,408 tonnes shipped in August this places the beef trade to Japan just 2% below the five-year average for August. After two successive months of increased beef exports from Australia the trade to Japan in August dipped by 16% from the levels seen in July.

South Korea – This was the only top four nation to eek out a marginal lift in beef exports from Australia in August with a 3% increase in volumes noted.
