Stewing over beef exports

  • Total beef export flows for June mostly trekked sideways, easing by just 442 tonnes over the month to see 79,553 tonnes swt exported.
  • Japan, saw Aussie beef export volumes slip by 12% over June. Meanwhile, beef exports to China lifted by nearly 3% during June.
  • Monthly beef exports to South Korea mirrors the average trend for June for the second consecutive month,  after registering a 6% lift from the volumes seen during May.
  • Australian beef exports to all other destinations (excluding Japan, China, South Korea and the USA) gained 9% over June.

The Detail

Total beef export flows for June mostly trekked sideways, easing by just 442 tonnes over the month to see 79,553 tonnes swt exported over the month, representing levels that are nearly 15% under the five-year average levels for June. Despite the relative stability in flows for total exports there was some variation for some key trade destinations.

Japan, saw Aussie beef export volumes slip by 12% over June to record 22,508 tonnes swt consigned. Current beef export flows from Australia to Japan sits 10% under the average seasonal pattern for June.

Meanwhile, beef exports to China lifted by nearly 3% during June to see 13,956 tonnes exported. This is the strongest monthly flows of Aussie beef to China seen so far this year and represents levels that are 7% under the June average level, according to the five-year seasonal pattern.

Monthly beef exports to South Korea mirrors the average trend for June for the second consecutive month with 14,067 tonnes shipped, after registering a 6% lift from the volumes seen during May.

US demand remains subdued, and continues to trek near the pattern set during 2021. At 10,887 tonnes for June 2022 demand from the USA for Aussie beef exports is just 5 tonnes less than the volumes seen in May. Current beef export volumes from Australia to the USA sits 48% under the five-year average level for June.

Australian beef exports to all other destinations (excluding Japan, China, South Korea and the USA) gained 9% over June to hit 18,135 tonnes. This is the strongest monthly flows seen to other destinations all season and represents levels that are on track with the five-year average for June.
