October 2024 saw the second highest monthly mutton export flows on record and November 2024 has managed to break the old record to set a new historic high for trade volumes. There was 28,249 tonnes of Aussie mutton exported over November, a 4% increase on the October volumes. Compared to the November five-year average volumes the current seasons mutton export levels are running 62% above the seasonal average levels.

A quick look at the top two trade destinations of China & Malaysia, and the remaining “other” destinations for Aussie mutton, is as follows.

China – November 2024 saw a new record for monthly mutton export volumes from Australia to China with 15,526 tonnes shipped over the month. The last quarter of the year often posts the highest seasonal flows to China fro Aussie mutton exports, so it is not unsurprising to see a record broken at this time in the year. However, the current export levels are exceptionally robust sitting 50% higher than the mutton export flows seen during November 2023 and 75% above the November average volumes, as per the last five years of the trade.

Malaysia – During November the mutton export levels from Australia to Malaysia dipped 15% from the levels exported in October 2024. The October volumes were the second highest monthly flows on record to Malaysia so a 15% decline is still coming down from relatively high trading volumes. There was 2,695 tonnes of Aussie mutton product exported to Malaysia in November 2024, which represents trade levels that are 86% above the five-year average flows for November.

The others – The mutton trade to other destinations (excluding China & Malaysia) increased by 6% during November to hit 10,029 tonnes. Compared to last year the current November flows are 28% stronger and are nearly 43% above the November average seasonal levels, based upon the last five-years of the trade.
