Breaking Bias: #GMO

The EP3 Breaking Bias algorithm is able to search Twitter for tweets that contain a particular keyword or hashtag and collate the number of positive or negative words or phrases that have been used in 1,000s of tweets on this specific hashtag or topic. Once we aggregate this data we can build a snapshot of the vibe towards a particular topic and the focus of this sentiment piece is genetically modified organisms.

Our Breaking Bias tool scoured the Twitter-sphere for recent tweets on the hashtag #GMO and the results suggest that the current vibe is against the use of genetically modified organisms. Indeed, analysis of the tweet sentiment registered a negative bias on 68% of 1,000s of tweets collected.

A breakdown of the most frequently used negative and positive words within tweets containing the hashtag #GMO revealed some pretty evocative language being used by anti-GMO campaigners.

We will aim to publish regular “Breaking Bias” articles on the EP3 website as topics of interest get our attention. Feel free to drop us a line if you want us to shine the light on a particular issue or hashtag.

Our previous Breaking Bias article looked at the phrase “Fake Meat” with some interesting sentiment revealed – check it out here.
