Breaking Bias: Fake Meat

The EP3 Breaking Bias algorithm is able to search Twitter for tweets that contain a particular keyword or hashtag and collate the number of positive or negative words or phrases that have been used in 1,000s of tweets on this specific hashtag or topic. Once we aggregate this data we can build a snapshot of the vibe towards a particular topic and the focus of this sentiment piece is fake meat.

Recent reports out of the USA have shown that Beyond Meat have experienced an 87% increase in their operating losses, when comparing the first nine months of 2021 to their 2020 financial results. Part of the growth in these losses have been fuelled on the back of a 10% drop in product sales. To add to the woes, Beyond Meat’s share price dropped 17% as analysts expressed concern about their long-term growth potential with the suggestion that they are reaching market saturation point.

Our Breaking Bias tool scoured the Twitter-sphere for recent tweets on the term “fake meat” and the results suggest that the current vibe is against this product. Indeed, analysis of the tweet sentiment registered a negative bias on 67% of 1,000s of tweets collected.

We will aim to publish regular “Breaking Bias” articles on the EP3 website as topics of interest get our attention. Feel free to drop us a line if you want us to shine the light on a particular issue or hashtag.
