AgWatchers: AI, robots and the end of the paddock as we know it

AgWatchers Podcast

This week on AgWatchers, Tim Neale from DataFarming joins Matt and Andrew to talk about the next shift in ag technology: moving beyond paddock-level thinking.

Tim’s argument is that the future of grain farming may be less about managing whole paddocks and more about managing every square metre on its own merits. As farms and machinery have become larger, the industry has gained scale, but lost some of the fine detail inside each paddock. That detail is where the next productivity gains may come from.

The conversation covers satellites, drones, robotics, AI and variable rate technology, with a strong focus on practical use. With fertiliser, fuel and machinery costs putting pressure on growers, technology needs to do more than look clever. It has to help farmers make better decisions, cut waste and put inputs where they will deliver the best return.

Tim also talks about virtual fencing, autonomous machines, Chinese machinery, Clarkson’s Farm, AgriTechnica and how consumer tech, from robot vacuums to cheap drones, is starting to shape what might be possible in agriculture.

As always, there is plenty of AgWatchers nonsense along the way, including Qantas lounge food, haggis, Brussels sprouts and Andrew’s unexplained love of the Kia Carnival.
